Tensions Escalate as North Thinadhoo MP Attempts Assault on President Nasheed

North Thinadhoo Parliament Member Abulla Mughnee

June 6, 2023

In a shocking and disturbing incident, Abdul Mughnee, parliament member representing North Thinadhoo, made a brazen attempt to assault the former president and current parliament president, Mohamed Nasheed.

A video capturing the altercation, which unfolded during a parliamentary session break has gone viral on Twitter, intensifying concerns about political tensions within the Maldives and the safety and security of former President Mohamed Nasheed who barley survived an attack on his life not long ago.

The video, which emerged on social media yesterday, shows Abdul Mughnee, also the chief whip of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary group, scolding and screaming angrily at President Nasheed.

The aggression and hostility displayed by Mughnee during this confrontation have sparked outrage among the public and raised questions about the stability of the country's political environment.

Parliament member Aslam, recognizing the gravity of the situation, intervened swiftly to calm Mughnee and managed to convince him to leave the vicinity. However, Mughnee persistently pursued President Nasheed, further exacerbating the tension and chaos within the parliamentary proceedings.

This incident follows a history of controversy surrounding Abdul Mughnee.

During the 2019 parliamentary election, allegations of Mughnee's abuse against his former wife surfaced, leading the MDP to withdraw their support for him.

Despite these serious accusations, Mughnee was later granted an MDP parliamentary candidacy slot by none other than the current parliament president, Mohamed Nasheed.

This decision created significant controversy within the public and raised concerns about the ethical standards and credibility of Mughnee's appointment.

The already strained relationships among former MDP members have reached a breaking point recently.

Mohamed Nasheed, serving as the parliament president, has spearheaded a faction within the MDP that has chosen to depart from the ruling party. They have registered a new political party named The Democrats, further "fueling" the political turmoil in the Maldives.

The attempt by Mughnee to physically assault President Nasheed has heightened tensions within the political landscape. It has brought to the forefront the underlying animosities and power struggles within the Maldivian political sphere.

The upcoming days will be critical in determining the path forward for the Maldivian political landscape.
